Kicking off the JAIF Challenge Series: AI for a Greener, More Data-Driven Future

What happens when a startup challenges its own solution? This question was explored during the Industry Challenge with Wasteer, held in May 2026 and organised by JAIF consortium partner hessian.AI, the Developer Student Club Darmstadt and Wasteer, with consortium support from AI Centre at the RWTH Aachen.

Wasteer, a startup working in the waste-to-energy sector, aims to contribute to a greener and more data-driven future. As part of the challenge, the startup invited young talents to take a fresh look at one of its own real-world use cases: How artificial intelligence can help optimise waste bunker management and the waste-mix to burn optimally. Using real industrial data, around 50 participants worked in teams during a 24-hour challenge. They explored how AI-based approaches could improve the storage, mixing and preparation of waste for incineration, with the aim of supporting efficient and stable plant operations.

Networking Opportunities for Students and Young Talents

The challenge brought together students and young talents with experts from industry and research. For participants, it provided an opportunity to apply their technical skills to a concrete industrial problem, work with authentic data and gain insights into the challenges of the waste-to-energy sector. For Wasteer, the format created an opportunity to put its own approach to the test and gain new perspectives from emerging talent.

For JAIF, the Industry Challenge illustrates the potential of connecting talent, industry and research at the intersection of energy, artificial intelligence and climate change. JAIF provided financial support for the event as part of its commitment to talent development and to strengthening connections between young talent and industry.

Solving Real-World Challenges with the Help of AI

The Wasteer challenge is part of a broader JAIF Challenge Series, which will offer young talents opportunities to work on real-world challenges together with companies and startups. In cooperation with JAIF consortium partners, the series aims to create practical spaces for knowledge exchange, experimentation and networking around key challenges of the energy transition. The Industry Challenge with Wasteer demonstrates how challenging established approaches and bringing together fresh perspectives can open up new possibilities for a more sustainable and data-driven energy future.
